Sleep Hygiene for Athletes: Unlock Hidden Recovery Gains
Sleep is part of recovery, but a rigid countdown rule is not a universal prescription.

Focus on a routine you can maintain
Sleep is part of recovery, but a rigid countdown rule is not a universal prescription. A useful starting point is a regular sleep schedule and an evening routine that gives you time to wind down. Work, caregiving, travel and health concerns can all affect what is realistic.
Run a small routine experiment
Pick one change for the next week. You might prepare tomorrow’s equipment earlier, move demanding work out of your wind-down period, or make the bedroom quieter and darker. Write down the change and how the next morning felt. Changing everything at once makes it harder to understand which part helped.
Track more than a wearable score
Record approximate sleep times, interruptions and your own sense of rest. Wearable sleep stages are estimates, so avoid treating a particular graph as proof that recovery succeeded or failed. If the night was difficult, review the day’s training demands with that context rather than trying to earn back a perfect score.
Know when routine changes are not enough
Persistent sleep difficulties, breathing concerns during sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness deserve professional attention. A training app cannot diagnose their cause. Fortiva can help place sleep notes beside training and habit information, making it easier to discuss patterns or adjust plans. The goal is a supportive routine that fits your life, not another performance target that makes bedtime stressful.
