Habit Stacking: The Psychology of Building Consistent Routines

Choose a cue that already happens

Habit stacking is a planning technique: connect a small new action to something that already occurs in your day. The cue should be specific enough to recognize. “After putting my lunch container away” is easier to act on than “when I have more motivation.” This is a practical prompt, not a guarantee that behavior becomes automatic.

Make the first action small

Write the plan in one sentence: after the cue, I will do the action. For example, after setting out tomorrow’s clothes, you might place your training shoes beside them. A tiny preparation step can be easier to repeat than a large new routine, especially on a crowded day. Choose an action that serves your own goal rather than adding tasks solely to keep a streak.

Plan for the missed day

Decide in advance how to restart when the cue is missed or your schedule changes. You might repeat the smallest version at the next opportunity. A broken streak is information about the routine, not a verdict on your character. If the action repeatedly fails to fit, reduce it or choose a more reliable cue.

Review whether the habit is useful

After a week, look at what actually happened and whether it helped. Fortiva’s habit tools can organize planned actions and completion history, but a checkmark does not by itself measure meaningful progress. Keep the routine only if it supports the day you want to have, and adapt it when circumstances change.
